  9. In this session we will go to another machine and get an Internet
  10. guide.  Many of you may have to watch their disk allocation as we
  11. go out and retrieve documents.
  12.  
  13. The command to type at your system prompt to find out your disk usage is:
  14.  
  15. > VM   : 'query disk'
  16. > VMS  : 'show quota'
  17. > UNIX : 'quota' or 'quota -v'
  18.  
  19. We will look at the SURAnet machine and see what documents are
  20. accessible.  I will use the "cd" command twice to change
  21. directories to get to pub/nic.  There I will use the command
  22. "get 00-README.FIRST | more" to read the readme file.

  24. (Jim mentions that this only works on UNIX machines.  For VMS use
  25. "get 00-README.FIRST tt:" and there is no equivilant for VM.)

  27. Finally I will get the document "Infoguide.8-17.txt".

  30.    Infoguide.xx-xx.txt where the xx-xx will be the date
  31.    of the last update.  Remember the capital I in Infoguide***

  58. 250-"How To" guides for network navigation tools such as, telnet, ftp,

  60. 250-entitled, directory.service.guides. Also of interest is the SURAnet
  61. 250-Guide to Selected Internet Resources, a weekly updated guide to new
  62. 250-and unique Internet resources. This document is entitled,
  63. 250-infoguide.X-XX.txt, where X-XX is the prefix for the most current
  64. 250-dated version. Get the 00-README file before you do anything.

  66. 250-transferring some documents due to the length of their titles. We have

  85. contain information on Directory Services, "Zen and the Art of the
  86. Internet", and several "How to Guides" for better network navigation.

  149. A brief description of the files included in the NIC directory follows:

  151. infoguide.X-X.txt: SURAnet's Guide to Selected Sources Available on
  152.       the Internet. The Guide is updated weekly, with the new version
  153.       available by Monday at 9am EST.
  154.  
  155. wholeguide.txt: The Internet Resource Guide
  156.  
  157. wholeguide-help.txt: A how to manual for the Internet Resource
  158.       Guide.
  159.  
  160. Internet-Tour.txt: Documentation on the history of the Internet and
  161.       guide to selected sources on the Internet.
  162.  
  163. acceptable.use.policy: SURAnetUs acceptable use policy document.
  164.  
  165. agricultural.list: The purpose of this Guide is to list
  166.       Agricultural and Related Sciences information resources available
  167.       through the Internet. Information resources include; a listing of over
  168.       40 libraries with extensive collections in agriculture; Internet BBS
  169.       such as Advanced Technology Information Network and CENET; listing of
  170.       mail based services such as Almanac Servers and over 60 Listserve
  171.       Discussion Groups; other  miscellaneous information resources such as
  172.       WAIS and FEDIX.

  174. archie.manual: A manual to the Internet archive server listing
  175.       service. Included are instructions on how to use the Archie
  176.       server. The address of the SURAnet Archie server is; telnet to
  177.       archie.sura.net,login; archie

  179. BIG-LAN-FAQ: BIG-LAN is a mailing list for discussion of issues
  180.       in designing and operating Campus-Size Local Area Networks, especially
  181.       complex ones utilizing multiple technologies and supporting multiple
  182.       to incorporate smaller Personal-Computer type LANs into the campus-wide
  183.       LAN; how to unify the mail systems, etc. This is an ideal list in which
  184.       to debate the relative merits of bridges vs routers. Information about
  185.       subscribing is included in the FAQ file.

  187. bbs.list.XX-XX: Zamfield's list of dial-up and Internet accessible Bulletin
  188.       Board Services(where XX-XX is the most recent dated version.)
  189.  
  190. cwis.list: UNC's list of Internet accessible Campus Wide Information
  191.       Servers.

  193. farnet-reccomendations: Summary of FARnet recommendations to
  194.       the National Science Foundation regarding backbone
  195.       connectivity in the post-1992 period.
  196.  
  197. gore.bill.6-6-92: A copy of the bill entitled "GPO Gateway to Government
  198.       Act of 1992." Introduced by Senator Al Gore, this bill will
  199.       allow for easier access to government documents.
  200.  
  201. interest.groups: A list of network discussion groups that deal with a
  202.       wide variety of subjects. Instructions for subscribing to each
  203.       interest/discussion group are given for each group. This document
  204.       is often referred to as the "List of Lists.".
  205.  
  206. library.conferences: A list, compiled by Chris Bailey of the University
  207.       of Houston, documenting Library Orientated Computer
  208.       Conferences and Electronic Serials.
  209.  
  210. medical.resources.XX-XX: A list compiled by Lee Hancock of the University
  211.       of Kansas Medical Center, which lists a wide variety of
  212.       medical/biological resources available on the Internet.
  213.       This list was last updated June 12, 1992.

  215. netiquette.txt: A guide to "netiquette" for the new user of the Internet.
  216.       This is a very well constructed guide for learning the basics of
  217.       what is and is not acceptable on the net. Taken from a new users
  218.       perspective, this guide is essential for new users to reconginze
  219.       their own reponsibilities on the net.
  220.  
  221. networking.terms: A glossary of networking terms for an easier
  222.       understanding of the myriad of networking terms.
  223.  
  224. obi.directory.index: An archive for the Online Book Initiative's "Online Book
  225.       Repository." The OBI project is centered around an effort to make freely
  226.       available full text novels in a common format for others to use as they
  227.       wish. This archive has many texts which are not available through
  228.       Project Gutenburg.
  229.  
  230. "Zen and the Art of the Internet" is now available via the sub-directory
  231.       entitled ZEN. This document is currently available in three different
  232.       formats. A README file is also available.
